The electronic prescription is a system introduced in Italy to digitize the medication prescribing and dispensing process. This system replaces traditional paper prescriptions and offers numerous advantages, such as greater traceability and fewer errors. Here's how it works and how to activate it, but first, let's talk about something fundamental: the prescription identification code.
How to Find the Electronic White Prescription Number
Where do I find the prescription number?
This is the main question. The prescription code, or Electronic Prescription Number (NRE), or, for non-SSN white prescriptions, the Electronic White Prescription Number (NRBE), are shown on the reminder under the barcode, in the upper right-hand corner of the prescription. (See image above.)
The white prescription identification code is a unique number that allows you to track and identify the prescription. This code is essential for managing the prescription and verifying it during medication dispensing. You can find the identification code in the following locations:
1. In the Electronic Document: If you received the prescription electronically, the identification code is included in the document itself. It is usually visible at the top or bottom of the document, next to other important information such as the doctor's name and patient details.
2. In the Prescription Confirmation: When the doctor sends an electronic blank prescription, a prescription confirmation is generated. The identification code is included in this confirmation and can be viewed on the health portal website or the dedicated e-prescription management app.
What the Identification Code Means
The blank prescription identification code ensures that the prescription is unique and not duplicated.
It is used for:
Verification and Control: It allows pharmacies and healthcare facilities to verify the authenticity of the prescription and ensure that the medication or service requested is the correct one.
Traceability: It facilitates prescription tracking within the healthcare system, improving the management and security of the dispensing process.
Fraud Prevention: Helps prevent the fraudulent use of prescriptions and ensures that each prescription is properly recorded and monitored.
The electronic white prescription represents a step forward in the digitalization of the healthcare system, offering greater efficiency and security in prescribing and dispensing medications.
Please look carefully here (the image above) where important information, such as the white prescription number, is located.
Activating the Electronic Prescription: Procedure for Doctors and Pharmacies
1. Registration in the Health Card System (TS) for Doctors:
Doctors, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities must be registered in the Health Card System (TS). This system is managed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and allows the issuing, transmission, and consultation of electronic prescriptions.
Doctors: Registration can be done through regional portals or directly on the Health Card portal.
Pharmacies: Pharmacies must register and obtain the necessary credentials to access the system. Further details can be found on the Health Card System website.
2. IT Equipment
Doctors:
Computer connected to the internet.
Certified software for managing electronic prescriptions: This software is provided free of charge by the Regions or can be a private program compatible with the TS System. Examples of software can be found on the respective Regions' websites or from authorized suppliers.
Pharmacies:
Computer connected to the internet.
Electronic prescription management software: Must be integrated with the TS System. Check with your software supplier to ensure it is compatible with the TS System.
3. National Services Card (CNS) and Digital Signature • Doctors: Must have the National Services Card (CNS), which serves as a digital signature. The CNS is issued by the Region to which they belong and allows the doctor to digitally sign electronic prescriptions. • How to obtain the CNS: Consult your Region's website for information on how to obtain the CNS.
Pharmacies: Pharmacies must also have the CNS to access the TS System and view electronic prescriptions.
